There is some confusion, and rightfully so, about the amount of RAM available on these tablets. The US version, this particular one (Z300-A1) does come with 2GB of RAM. Other countries, your results will vary. In Canada for example, the Z300-A1 comes with 1GB of RAM.

So at $159, for a 10-inch Android tablet? That’s a very good price. Consider the two main selling points, perhaps even three selling points:

  • is compatible with the Z Stylus pen (release date soon we hope)
  • dual stereo front facing speakers
  • has the Audio Dock keyboard docking accessory (release date soon we hope)

If you look around at competing 10-inch tablets from recognizable brand names, you will quickly see that the ZenPad 10 at $159 is a real bargain. Why the $20 price cut already? Who knows. You might need a bit of patience for the Stylus and Keyboard Dock to arrive in the US market, but it should not be a long wait now.

At $129, is the Z380CX the best budget 8-inch Android tablet for the price?

zenpad-8-z380-z380caIn the US right now, the ZenPad 8.0 (Z380CX) is available for $129. The other two 8-inch ZenPad tablets sell for $199 and $299. Given the hardware on the basic Z380CX, how does it stack up against other similar 8-inch tablets? Let’s take a closer look.

First, let’s clarify the 2 versions of the Z380 that are on the market. First, the Z380C is listed at a retail price of $149 and the Z380CX is listed at a retail price of $129. We are uncertain of the reasoning, but it does appear that Asus first launched the Z380C in North America, but has since replaced it with the cheaper Z380CX.

The difference between these two versions comes down to the cameras and RAM. It’s strange to say this, but the $129 model has 2GB and the $149 model has 1GB RAM. The Z380CX has very low rated cameras, and this to a large extend explains the price difference. When we’ve combed over the specs and differences, the only spec we spotted as a downgrade on the Z380CX was with the front and rear camera megapixel rating.

So all things considered, the X380CX is the best option to buy. It has the custom cases and has 2GB of RAM which is going to provide better value overall than slightly better megapixels on your front and rear cameras. We are not certain also the availability of the Z380CX model, so you need to check your country and the model availability.

So how is $129 against the competition? Surprisingly, it’s good but it’s not the greatest. At this price point you’re going to find some slightly dated tablets in the 8-inch size that are right in there on sale for around the same price. Lenovo and Samsung in particular have competing models at this size and price point, but those tablets lack the customization of the Z380CX. The 2GB of RAM in the Z380CX is not what you see in competing tablets and those have 1GB of RAM pretty much in every comparison we looked at.

There is always something to be said for the latest technology. If you see a brand name 8-inch tablet for $110 to $130, consider the year of the release and the version of Android that is available to upgrade to. The ZenPad Z380CX has the newest Android OS which does add some extra value to the comparison. You can find better cameras on competing 8-inch Android tablets, but as mentioned, it’s give and take. More RAM with worse cameras or less RAM but better cameras.

If you’re not into the ZenPad S 8.0 price range, then $129 for the 8-inch Z380CX is worth looking at. Considering you have the ability to use the Audio Cover and Power Case, those are impressive accessories. Tablets release a year or more ago simply have previous generation components and getting the new technology add value to your purchase. No question it’s competitive in the marketplace for the $120 to $130 Android tablets. Good luck!

Italy is getting ZenPad tablets – “coming soon” says Asus

According to the Asus Italy Facebook page, ZenPad tablets are “coming soon”. That isn’t to say you can’t find them in Italy, it’s just that they haven’t really been officially unveiled/launched and made available in a wide range of retailers just yet.

Italy has been a strong market so expect to see a good selection of ZenPads including 3G and 4G LTE models. We hope to break news about official release dates in Italy along with prices. Let’s hope it’s days and not weeks to wait!

Asus not done with promo videos – New ZenPad S 8.0 Video

If you’ve watched the other recent promotional videos, then you may not need to watch this latest one. We’ve seen a Z580CA official promotional video in the past, so we’re not sure what’s new in this more rounded out ZenPad S 8.0 video. Asus shows the features and selling points, along with the accessories that are going to be available.

So enjoy the video and see if you get a sense of deja vu!

IFA 2015 – Asus announces ZenPad tablets…again!

Asus has plenty of interesting new product at the IFA 2015 event. With great interest we were watching for tablets, and like we figured, the ZenPad tablets would see another mention.

With our keen eye on all things ZenPad, we didn’t see anything new in the slides or presentation. It wasn’t so much a Europe launch event, as in with release date information or prices in EURO. It was for all intents and purposes and opportunity to get the new brand name out in the public eye, on a big stage. Most people take awhile before picking up on brand names and switching to “ZenPad” will take some getting used to for the general public out there.

Those of you looking for some Padfone details, there were no such details. It does look like 2016 will be the time when the new Padfone comes to market. It was leaked a while back about the new upcoming Snapdragon processor being used in the next Padfone, and that processor wasn’t scheduled for devices until 2016. So for us that’s a bit disappointing as the Padfone is really innovative and interesting. We would like to cover Padfone news along with the other Asus tablet news in the future, just to keep ourselves busy!

ZenPad Case: Zen Clutch for ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA, C580C)

The classiest and most elegant looking Asus case would be the Zen Clutch series and it’s available for all ZenPad models, with the exception of the ZenPad C series of tablets.

Today we get a better look at the Zen Clutch case for the ZenPad S 8.0 tablet. It definitely keeps a tight fit and low profile which is expected from official accessories. We’ve had a question in the past about the pen holder and whether there is a different version of these cases that doesn’t have the pen holder. From what we’ve seen? No, there is no other option. We would like to know if the pen holder clip is removable, but that appears very unlikely. So to the Z580C tablet owners who can’t use the stylus even if they wanted to? We’re not sure what to say at this time about the hoop on the cover.
