Asus ZenPad S 8.0 vs. Apple iPad takes a look at speed and price comparisons

Asus is at it again. Taking on Apple is no easy feat but clearly Asus is not afraid. In fact the flagship ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA) model stands above the competition in a lot of ways. From the official Asus Facebook page, we see some more comparison slides. This time it’s speed and price. I think everyone should have a long hard look at the $299 vs. $499 price comparison. This is staggering and it’s something that Asus can market against anyone including Samsung in the Android tablet space.

We noticed quite clearly from our poll results that surfing the web and using social media is the most common use of a tablet for you. It would appear that testing proves the ZenPad S 8.0 is very snappy when it comes to page loads. Faster for less cost? That’s a winning combination.

If you can’t buy ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA) in your country yet, here’s why

We just watched the Asus investor conference for 3Q 2015. Within that conference we do believe that there is an answer to this question:

“When can I buy the ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA) in (insert your country)?”

Jerry Shen, Asus CEO, has talked in previous investor conferences regarding a strategy called Hero Model, Hero Country. In the most recent investor conference this November 11th, Jerry Shen talked again about Hero Model, Hero Country as it relates to their mobile products (smartphones and tablets). Shen mentioned a time in the past when Asus previously only sold notebooks. They would sell to 60 to 80 countries at the same time. Jerry Shen restated that Asus can no longer release products in that way and would use the “hero” strategy which involves selecting a few hero countries and targeting them first.

Until now, we didn’t have a clear understanding of what this strategy meant as it related to the ZenPad tablets. We can now say with some certainty that this “Hero Model, Hero Country” strategy is playing a role in the delayed release of the ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA) to some markets. This may be the explanation for some of you who are patiently waiting for a retail release of the Z580CA.

One more important comment from Jerry Shen regarding this hero strategy was mentioned during this investor conference.

“I often say to my colleagues that we will only sell hero models to hero countries” – Jerry Shen, Asus CEO

So if you’re not in a “hero country” are you out of luck for the ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA)? We don’t have a clear answer just yet. We can say that the Philippines just got a retail release of the Z580CA this past week and that market doesn’t strike us as being a “hero” market. The quote above is perhaps more of a passing comment than it is a rule. We are going to see over the next few months which markets are without the ZenPad S 8.0 and then we can determine the scope of this strategy. For now we suggest you hold tight for more news if your country is still awaiting a release.

Our view and hope is that the strategy is more about who gets the hero first, rather than simply denying some markets entirely of a hero product. We’re watching this and will update the site accordingly.

Philippines – Where to buy the ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA) full listings

A lot of excitement in the Philippines for the retail release of the hero Z580CA. The price is Php 16,995 and comes with a ZenClutch case in the bundle. Here are the retailers around the Philippines that are currently selling this model and we are looking for information regarding Lazada and when they will be stocking the Z580CA.

Asus tackles “i” brand in new tablet comparison video

ipad-mini-vs-zenpad-s-8We have come up with our own articles for the iPad vs. ZenPad comparisons. In the recent past, Asus has been more than willing to compare their products to the i brand. Not sure what the i brand is? Let’s get serious here folks! The Asus ZenBook is a real competitor to the Apple Air and in a lot of way Asus beats Apple. An ocassional dust up between brands isn’t a bad thing. We say bring it on.

In this comparison, you will get a look at the iPad mini 3 vs. the ZenPad S 8.0 (Z580CA). In a way this is more practical comparison than just picking certain specs.

We thought we had covered most aspects of the comparisons, but it does appear that there are some other nuggets that the ZenPad S 8.0 has over an i brand tablet. The 1GB of RAM on i brand vs. the 4GB RAM on the ZenPad S 8.0 is accurate with a iPad mini 3, but the iPad mini 4 comes with 2GB of RAM. Still, it’s a lop sided smack down by Asus regarding RAM.

The viewing area is interesting to consider. A 74% vs. 64% viewing area is a big deal in reality and real usage scenarios.

The Tru2Life and Tru2Life+ are certainly a legit benefit and are value added. The video didn’t compare prices and they didn’t compare speakers. Both big wins by Asus also. The big win by Asus though is the overall “more for less” aspect.

UK – You can now buy Z580CA with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage!

I don’t think it would be surprising to hear that we have been getting a lot of questions from UK residents who are asking about the hero model of the Z580CA. We haven’t been able to provide good news, until now that is! You can now get the full fledged hero in the UK for a price of £279.61.

You may notice in the specs listed on Amazon that it says a 1.2GHz processor. We believe the listing is wrong, and in fact this model Z580CA comes packed with the Intel Atom Z3580 @ 2.3GHz clock speed. All we’ve seen is the top model with the fastest processor and we have verified the model number and specs on other retails. All indicators are that the Amazon UK site has the incorrect processor listed.

Up until now, the UK market has seen a lesser spec Z580CA with a slower Z3560 Intel Atom, 32GB storage and 2GB of RAM. If you’ve been waiting for the true hero, now is your chance to buy it in the UK!

Lowest price ever for ZenPad C 7.0 (Z170C) – $86.99 US

Up until now, we’ve seen a $5 discount with the budget 7-inch ZenPad C 7.0 tablet. Right now you can get it even cheaper. At a price of $86.99 US the ZenPad C 7.0 should be a serious consideration for anyone looking for a small Android tablet running the new Lollipop 5.0 operating system. You may find some older 7-inch tablets at around the same price range, but you’re getting an older OS, older processor and likely only 8GB storage as opposed to the 16GB that the ZenPad C 7.0 comes with.

The ZenPad C 7.0 has a 1024 x 600 resolution, 1GB RAM and Intel Atom x3-C3200 processor @ 1.1GHz. If you’re wondering about the specs and reviews? I think it’s worthwhile consider that on some big retailers, customers who bought the ZenPad C 7.0 gave it 3.8 out of 5 stars (Best Buy) and 3.3 stars out of 5 (Amazon.com). If you have realistic expectations, it sounds like a good bargain.
